Data Management 1: From Relational to MongoDB

Upgrading an application by replacing a RDBMS with MongoDB provides a foundation for improving scalability and performance, enabling the rapid rollout of new application functionality, and reducing costs. The challenge is that the transition process is not obvious. The data must be migrated, the application code updated, and all this must be accomplished with minimal application downtime. While this process requires careful planning and design, it is not as overwhelming as it seems on the surface. This presentation will cover the various tasks that need to be considered to migrate from a RDBMS to MongoDB and present alternatives for performing this transition with minimal application downtime.

Over the years, iGo was acquired by Exact Target, which was in turn acquired by Salesforce, and the application developed into a broader suite of analytics, marketing automation, and predictive intelligence. E-Commerce and MongoDB at Backcountry.com

The talk will describe the results we got by adopting MongoDB in key areas of our business. Backcountry.com is a midsize company in constant evolution looking for growth in a extremely competitive ecosystem. We try to be agile and target fast prototyping and data-based decisions. Our dev stack used to heavily rely on Postgres and Oracle, but in a short period of time we were able to introduce MongoDB in a key set of applications and we've seen positive results. We're less dependent on monolithic applications and we're progressively moving to Microservices. By choosing MongoDB as one of our main technologies, our dev teams became more productive as well as mature. They see beyond relational approaches and explore more options to tackle different problems.
