Now that you are back on 3.6 and still experiencing the same issue I think you need to focus your attention to the platform.

Review and ensure you are implementing the recommendations in the Productions Notes and Operations Checklist, specifically AWS EC2

Review your mongod logs and check for warnings at startup and fix them.

The whole host is ‘crashing’ or mongod ?

Are the hosts dedicated for mongodb or are the other softwares co-located on the host.

How does other metrics of the host look, Load Average, IO Stat, CPU Usage ?

Also check dmesg for OOM.
